Landscaping in Melbourne

A new garden often starts with a design and ends with a build, and one business may not do both. Asking each the same questions shows which parts their price covers.

BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01Do you draw the design, build it, or both?If both, ask if the design is charged separately and if it is yours to keep.
02What will the design show?A plan on paper, a list of plants, or drawings of how it will look.
03Which paving or decking material are you quoting?Write down the name and finish, since prices vary a lot between them.
04Is the lawn seeded, turfed or left out?And who prepares the ground under it.
05What will happen to the trees and plants already here?Ask whether removing or moving any of them is in the price, and who checks with the council about any tree.
06How will the machines get into the yard?A narrow side path or a home with no rear lane can change the method and the cost.
07Who is on site day to day?Ask whether the work is done by their own team or by others they bring in.
08What upkeep will the finished garden need?Ask whether they offer to maintain it, and what that costs.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From landscapemelbourne.com.au, a concept page.

Design first, or straight to building

A design you are free to share lets you take the same plan to more than one builder, which makes their quotes far easier to compare. Ask the designer whether the plan is yours to share before you pay. Building from a rough brief is quicker, but each landscaper will imagine a different garden.

Ask each business which way they work, and whether the design fee comes off the build if you go ahead with them.

Before the first visit

Gather photos of gardens you like and note how you use the yard now: where the sun falls, where children or dogs play, where you sit.

Have a rough budget in mind and say it early. A landscaper can then tell you what fits, rather than design something you will cut back later.
